:: We have all at one time in our life thought we need to change jobs; move on to something more challenging, more rewarding and hopefully better paid. But how do you know when the time is right for a career change? We reveal the key signs that show it’s time to quit your job…
Wasted weekends
If the 'Sunday night blues' become a regular occurrence or, worse, you begin to get them on a Saturday this is a bad sign. If you're relieved on Friday but become more miserable as the weekend goes on, then you need to think seriously about changing your job.
Hitting the brick wall
If there is no room for promotion or you've been overlooked on more than one occasion this is also a warning sign. If you're overlooked ask what skills and experience you need to be a credible candidate next time. If your company has a poor track record of career progression or only looks after its rising stars, then the only option left is for you to leave.
You know it all
If you've acquired no new skills in the past 18 months it's probably time to go. Dig out your CV from when you first applied for the post and look at the 'skills' section, can you add to it? If the answer's no then it's time to move on.
There may be trouble ahead
Redundancy might be round the corner if the company is losing money or market share. Or, alternatively, if it's about to be taken over it may be the ideal time to switch. If you are kept on, your job and team may change radically, and you could end up with twice the workload, half the resources and no prospect of remuneration.
Compromise
If you disagree with the direction the company is taking, its values or products, or you are embarrassed to be working there – possibly even asked to compromise your principles – then you should quit. Though don't go without a fight. Even if you've had it with what you're being asked to do, don't be afraid to raise the issues during the exit interview. :: |
